Crystal Lagoon™ at Southshore Bay

The community of Southshore Bay in west central Florida ratchets up the fun and relaxation factor with the introduction of its centerpiece amenity – a 5-acre swimming lagoon offering a host of welcome features sure to make this a popular destination for residents and visitors alike.

What community swimming pool do you know of that sports an aquatic obstacle course, paddleboard and kayak rentals, a swim-up tiki bar, an event stage, wading areas for little ones, cabanas and beaches – all presented together in a 5-acre pleasure park in sun-drenched Florida?

The Challenge: How to Transform a Rural Florida Setting into a Magical Oasis of Serious Leisure Activity.

The creator of this aquatic wonder put its faith in Unique Engineering Solutions to design the elements needed for a breathtaking project that demanded uncompromising quality.

At its core we designed a concrete retaining wall, measuring about a mile in length, to serve as a perimeter for the water’s edge. Next was figuring out how to design a pool liner (measured in acreage, not feet) to manage the enormous effort of retaining the water while balancing the maintenance aspect once the lagoon is in operations.

Add to that design to incorporate ultrasonic cleaning, UV lights, deep sanitation systems, and settling tanks – as well as a complete 10-acre site-electrical system capable of handling the voltage and amperage demands of the project.

As Unique Engineering Solutions company owner Andrew Hall puts it, “We had to design the full aquatic water treatment system to keep water acceptable to the Florida Department of Health & Public Safety as a swimmable body of water.” No small feat when you consider the body of water in question is nearly the size of four football fields.

A Man-Made Marvel that Plays Nicely with the Environment.

In anticipation of other visitors the lagoon might attract, we incorporated an ultrasonic filtration system to handle the biological load. We also worked with the developer’s patented, environmentally friendly technology resulting in remarkably less water consumption than if the land were to be used for agricultural purposes.

In full, Unique Engineering Solutions was able to work with the developer to deliver an eye-popping amenity that uses far fewer chemical products and far less energy than is necessary to maintain traditional swimming pools.
